Although ted has served me really well for the past couple of years, its gotten worse and worse and since development has come to a halt it doesn't seem like there's much hope for it.

I've heard of 'sickbeard' for similar functionality (but primarily from usenet),
and 'showrss' for website based subscription of RSS feeds (and utorrent I guess).

If you've got an actively developed alternative, please share it.

Just finished my weekly cleanup of ted's mess and downloading 7 stalled episodes for various shows. Still looking for a better alternative.

I'm kind of in the same place as you guys.
After I had to reset all settings 2weeks ago due to some lame problem, and it just made a complete settings reset some days ago and backup was corrupt or something im also on the market for a "new one".

Having to manually QA my shows again this week, I'm sick of it. I think I'll try setting up sickbeard.

I figured I owed it to everybody here to report back.

A couple caveats - sickbeard is a little harder to set up , and at least for me, a little more confusing getting started. It follows the same sort of pattern as ted does -- first you have to have your torrent program set up, then you have to have ted set up. So if you are new to NZBs, and sickbeard at the same time, there's a bit of a curve.

Having said that.

It is SO much better. Ease of use is amazing. Functionality is amazing. It automatically looked at all my shows and detected the holes that ted had left because I had to manually fill in the blanks sometimes. It downloads descriptions, renames, moves.

I had sabnzbd setup beforehand, and now sickbeard is set up and doing its thing and everything is going extremely smoothly. And I've got a nice display of all my shows, whats coming up, whats passed, whats cancelled, whats not. At this point I'm disabling TED and all its headaches.

Thanks for the memories TED. It was a fun time while it lasted but I've moved on to something way better.

I personally went with showRSS. (Sickbeard also look awesome though!)
First off, you kind of need some RSS/µTorrent experience as I can see that it would be hard for someone that haven't done anything like this before.

As always its a pain to set it up from scratch.
After adding all series to my showRSS account I added the RSS feed in µTorrent and added them in "RSS Downloader" in µTorrent as well.
Search the feed every 15min and automatically download every new episode added to my specified feed.
And no extra program needed.

Ok guys i have found 2 great replacements for TED on Mac OSX. TED served me well for about a year but lately it has failed me way too much and its just not worth it anymore. I might come back if it becomes better again. It cant even download castle or chase based on there pre-defined shows.

Ok after my little rant. The first is free which is TVShows from http://embercode.com/tvshows/. The second which I am currently using because it also does NZB support and Custom Torrent support fro shows like lip service which is on BBC and not on TVRSS or EZTV.it. It is called automatic. It is better coded, looks prettier, and works better. You can get it at http://codingcurious.com/automatic/. It is like $20 for a full license after a 14 day trial. I bought it without doubt and I love it.

Hope this helps.

I can't say enough good things about sickbeard and sabnzbd. I have a movies "wish list" [actually this is another addon called couch potato app], I have a schedule, and history of my tv shows, it can download whole seasons at once, it can go back and "upgrade" episodes for higher quality/resolution versions if you configure it to do so. And it's all freely available.

I also heard about something called 'Episode Butler' which may be a possibility for some people who want a simple but inflexible setup.

Does Sickbeard work well with just Torrents? It seems it's designed to work with Usenet and the Torrent support was just added as a side thought. Does anyone have a free usenet server to recommend? I'm with Time Warner and they used to have a usenet server but not any more.

Thanks.

I'm bumping this thread because I see a lot of users who aren't getting the picture that there is virtually no support available for this project anymore and painfully wasting their time posting and trying to contribute suggestions.

thanks for this thread, I'll give these alternatives a shot.

I also noticed on Teds buglist that the priority fixes are all targetted at new features rather than fixing bugs. This just shows where their attention is heading.

I believe you should be able to set how often utorrent queries your RSS, and that might help.
Otherwise I'm afraid kelemvor will have to step in if he's around because I haven't used showrss "in production".

And it looks like the final death knell of this forum has struck, since we're seeing a lot of spam thats going unattended as well, so, thanks for the good times all!

(My sickbeard + sabnzbd + couch potato setup is going strong, and between a free ipv6 usenet server, and my ISP news server I could get by without paid usenet - although I keep a block account for other stuff I want thats not current).

I'm also having too many problems with TED these days. Just misses too many times. I'll try Sickbeard.
